The Tourneo Custom – which will take the iconic Transit name in commercial vehicle form – was first unveiled in concept form at the 2012 Geneva motor show and has been confirmed for production. The Transite/Tourneo follows Ford's Kinetic design approach that features on the company's passenger car range, including a sportier stance, bold rising shoulder line, flush glazing, distinctive trapezoidal grille and prominent wheel lips. Available in eight or nine seat configurations as a passenger vehicle, the Tourneo Custom comes in both short and long wheelbase, which measure in at 4,970mm and 5,430mm respectively while the vehicle stands at less than two meters high.
There's a new sponsored project that is just getting under way at Art Center College of Design, the likes of which hasn't been seen in a very long time - if at all. The school's Transportation Design department has helped bring together BMW with Exa Corporation, a Boston-based virtual aerodynamic simulation company, and has tasked the students to re-design the current BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle with the hope of dramatically increasing its aerodynamic efficiency while still retaining the BMW flagship SAV design language. Car Design New has now published the second edition of the Car Design Glossary. Designed to enable budding designers - and those wishing to describe the products of the designer's imagination - to decipher the language used in automotive studios, the Glossary was devised by David Browne, Course Director of Automotive Design at Coventry University School of Art & Design. He created the compilation of terms as an academic piece of research and collaborated with CDN to help generate feedback on these terms from designers themselves.
